Responsive ClassroomNicholas GascichFri, 23 Sep 2022 18:38:42 +0000/resources/responsive-classroom61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:632dfd1a888a9d21dfd1b2b3Responsive Classroom is an evidence-based approach to teaching and discipline that focuses on engaging academics, positive community, effective management, and developmental awareness.
The Responsive Classroom approach strengthens educators’ ability to:

• Design lessons that are active and interactive
• Use effective teacher language to promote academic and social growth
• Encourage engagement by giving students meaningful choices
• Start each day in a way that sets a positive tone for learning (morning meeting)
• Set high expectations and teach students how to meet them
• Establish routines that promote autonomy and independence
• Build a sense of community and shared purpose
• Teach students critical social skills such as problem-solving, communication, and collaboration

The secret to strong classroom management lies in predictable routines and procedures. From entering and exiting the classroom to managing materials to moments of transition, well-established routines and procedures can provide a natural flow of calmness and order to every part of the day. Giving students clear expectations for these routines and procedures helps them feel safe, independent, and empowered to participate in their classroom. Interactive Modeling is a specific practice Responsive Classroom educators use to establish classroom routines and procedures, especially in the first six weeks of school.

The use of logical consequences is one part of an approach to discipline used in the Responsive Classroom. It’s a powerful way of responding to children’s misbehavior that not only is effective in stopping the behavior but is respectful of children and helps them to take responsibility for their actions.

People often ask, “How are logical consequences any different from punishment?

The goal of punishment is to enforce compliance with the rules by using external controls or authoritarian discipline.
• While effective in stopping the misbehavior of the moment, punishment does little to increase student responsibility.
• Punishment often leads to feelings of anger, discouragement and resentment, and an increase in evasion and deception.

The goal of logical consequences is to help children develop internal understanding, self-control, and a desire to follow the rules.
• Logical consequences help children look more closely at their behaviors and consider the results of their choices.
• Unlike punishment, where the intention is to make a child feel shamed, the intention of logical consequences is to help children develop internal controls and to learn from their mistakes in a supportive atmosphere.

Leading through Faith & ServiceGuest UserWed, 20 Jul 2022 19:23:05 +0000/resources/service-amp-leadership61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:62d85268879fda23469b4598At ÒÁÈËÖ±²¥, leadership and service go hand in hand. Rooted in our Catholic faith and our parish spirituality of Pray – Serve – Share, students are encouraged to recognize their gifts, use them with purpose, and make a positive difference in the lives of others.

Leadership

Students develop leadership skills throughout their Saint Clement experience—in the classroom, through faith, on athletic teams, in clubs, and through service to the school and parish community. They learn to communicate effectively, work collaboratively, make thoughtful decisions, persevere through challenges, and lead with compassion and integrity.

Leadership opportunities include Student Council, Student Ambassadors, Anchor Buddies, Model United Nations, Future Business Leaders of America, athletics, classroom leadership roles, liturgical participation, and other extracurricular activities.

Service

Service is at the heart of the Saint Clement experience. Students are given meaningful opportunities to put their faith into action by sharing their time and talents with others.

Throughout the year, students participate in age-appropriate service projects within our school, parish, and greater Chicago community. They also serve the parish as Altar Servers, Lectors, Greeters, and, for our oldest students, Eucharistic Ministers.

Recent service opportunities have included preparing meals for those experiencing homelessness, assembling hygiene kits for vulnerable youth, organizing food and clothing drives, participating in Saint Clement Service Day, and providing Christmas gifts for students at a local Chicago public school.

Our students have the opportunity to participate in music, performance arts, and visual arts. Additionally, because we are located in such close proximity to amazing cultural arts opportunities, our faculty and students are continually taking advantage of the many offerings of the fine city of Chicago including The Chicago Symphony Orchestra and local theaters such as The Greenhouse, The Athenaeum, and The Auditorium. In addition, students have opportunities to express their interests and creativity via the forums below.

Music & Theater

  • Jubilate Children's Choir (grades 3-8) This group sings at our weekly all school Masses and at some Sunday liturgies.

  • Clementines (grades 4-5) perform a mini musical for the student body.

  • Anchords (grades 6-8) is a pop group that performs at Christmas and spring concerts. We also go Christmas caroling at a nursing home.

  • Our big musical (grades 5-8) takes place in the spring.

  • Music adventure classes are offered after school to students in younger grades.

These groups give students who love music extra chances to perform!

Concerts

All Saint Clement students perform in an annual Christmas concert and a formal Spring concert. The performances are held in conjunction with our Visual Arts Gallery and Show. All students in Pre-K through 8 receive music instruction at Saint Clement during the school day. We feature singing, music theory and history, composition and music technology, ukuleles, and xylophones.  Our formal concerts throughout the year allow us to come together as a community and honor all of their hard work, dedication, and learning.

Visual Arts

The Visual Arts program at Saint Clement is rooted in the fundamentals but allows students to gain confidence and self-awareness through exploration, risk taking, and imagination. The curriculum focuses on the seven Elements of Art and seven Principles of Design.  Students are encouraged to explore a variety of media and techniques all while implementing the Elements and Principles, at an age appropriate level.  Influential and significant genres and artists in the history of art are integrated into the lessons where possible.  Students create in an environment that not only helps them to problem solve and demonstrate creativity but also to appreciate art and understand how it functions in society.

STEAM & TechnologyGuest UserWed, 20 Jul 2022 17:02:13 +0000/resources/steam-amp-technology61266174acf3a304cbe35b3a:6196ba26752836391997f523:62d833571feabe7dc5f091f3At Saint Clement, we're continually amazed by our students' growing independence, creativity, and productivity as they integrate technology into their assignments. Our students have access to a wide array of technological tools and applications, seamlessly integrated into our curriculum and teaching practices. In STEAM classes, students work with tools like Ozobots, Dash Robots, and iPads to learn coding concepts such as sequencing, events, loops, algorithms, operations, and variables. In Digital Media Literacy, students work with iPads to increase proficiency with computer skills, such as typing, and to critically analyze digital media tools and content.

Primary School Technology

In the Primary School, we inspire students with a lasting love of learning, including a deep appreciation for technology. Starting in Kindergarten, each student is introduced to their first Chromebook, which they use to engage in technology-related projects and activities. Technology is embedded in the core curriculum, reinforcing classroom learning. All students in grades K-5 are provided with individual Chromebooks. Every year, students and parents sign our Acceptable Use Policy, which covers personal privacy, internet safety, and responsible technology behavior.

Technology instruction is guided by the ISTE National Education Technology Standards (NETS) and is integrated with classroom learning. Key activities include:

  • Language development through reports, writing, and desktop publishing.

  • Math-related activities involving quantification, labeling, and measurement.

  • Data collection, recording, interpretation, and representation.

  • Online research and comparison with other information sources.

  • Multimedia creativity involving pictures, sound, clip art, text, and visual transitions.

Kindergarten - Grade 5

  • Every classroom is equipped with a Newline interactive screen with built-in whiteboard and web search functionalities.

  • Each classroom has an Apple TV used for audio/visual presentations and streaming educational content.

  • Document cameras in every room for instruction.

  • Grades K-3: Each classroom has a cart for housing and charging Chromebooks.

  • Grades 4-5: Students are issued Chromebooks and chargers, which they take home to complete homework.

Middle School Technology

In Middle School, students in grades 6-8 are provided with one-to-one Chromebooks, used primarily in the classroom. As students transition from childhood to young adulthood, we emphasize the development of healthy technology habits. The Acceptable Use Policy, signed annually by students and parents, addresses technology wellness, internet safety, and responsible behavior.

Technology skills are integrated into the classroom environment, aligned with ISTE National Education Technology Standards and 21st Century Skills. Skills are taught contextually, with students learning as they apply them in various academic areas. Additional resources include digital photography and editing, video recording and editing, content-specific technologies, Newline interactive screens, Apple TVs, document cameras, digital audio recording and editing, and online tools.

Examples of context-based technology skills:

  • Audio recording in world language classes to demonstrate language mastery.

  • Word processing in language arts as a primary tool for writing.

  • Online research and database use in social studies and science for research.

  • Spreadsheet manipulation in science and math for data illustration and communication.

Skills such as collaboration, communication, and creative expression are woven throughout all content areas, ensuring a comprehensive technology education.

The Saint Clement Middle School Program for Grades 6–8 is designed to support students during an important stage of academic, social, emotional, and spiritual growth. Our faculty understands the unique needs of early adolescents and creates an environment that challenges students while providing the structure, guidance, and encouragement they need to thrive.

Our rigorous curriculum emphasizes strong foundational skills, critical thinking, creativity, inquiry, and independent learning. In both English Language Arts and Mathematics, students are placed in either Accelerated or On-Grade-Level courses, allowing them to be appropriately challenged and supported based on their individual readiness and ability.

Core academic subjects include English Language Arts, literature, mathematics, science, social studies, religion, and Spanish. Students also participate in weekly classes in STEAM, physical education, music, and visual arts, providing opportunities to explore interests and develop skills beyond the traditional classroom.

Throughout Middle School, students are encouraged to take greater ownership of their learning, strengthen study and organizational habits, communicate effectively, collaborate with others, and think critically about new ideas and perspectives. Our goal is to prepare students to become confident, responsible, and independent learners who are well equipped for the transition to high school.

Advisory Program

Our Advisory Program ensures that every Middle School student has a faculty member who serves as a personal and academic advocate throughout their Middle School experience.

Students meet with their Advisory group each morning and afternoon, providing consistent opportunities to connect, organize, reflect, plan, and problem-solve with the guidance of a trusted adult. Advisors get to know each student well and serve as a primary point of contact for families.

Advisors support the whole child by monitoring academic progress, helping students set goals, encouraging self-advocacy, facilitating student-teacher conversations when needed, and helping students better understand how they learn best.

Our Elementary School program for Grades 1–5 supports the whole child—intellectually, socially, emotionally, creatively, physically, and spiritually.

Teachers create engaging, academically rich learning experiences that build on students’ interests, curiosity, and individual strengths. Core instruction includes language arts, literature, religion, social studies, science, and mathematics, complemented by weekly classes in Spanish, music, art, physical education, and technology.

Students have frequent opportunities to learn independently and collaboratively through hands-on experiences, classroom discussion, creative projects, and fine arts. These experiences help students build confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and develop a lasting curiosity and love of learning.

We maintain high expectations while providing the support students need to grow. Through daily routines, classroom responsibilities, and age-appropriate assignments, students strengthen organization, independence, and responsibility. Social-emotional skills, positive relationships, and conflict resolution are intentionally developed throughout the school day.

We recognize that the elementary years are especially important in shaping students’ attitudes toward faith, learning, themselves, and others. Our teachers know their students well and create a safe, nurturing environment where each child is challenged, supported, and encouraged to grow.
